Don't Miss This!--Summer 2010 Edition

September 18th is official World Water Monitoring Day
(WWMD), an international education and outreach program that helps
citizens get involved in monitoring their local water quality.
People all around the world will be testing their water on this
day. Any local water body (which can be as small as a creek or as
large as an ocean) is an acceptable water source to sample.
Smithfield Foods and its subsidiaries have sponsored this effort
for over seven years, and participation in this event from
each company facility and farm is now one of our Sustainability
Program targets. You could even include local schools, churches and
Boy and Girl Scout troops, or any other local organizations in your
sampling events!
Testing kits are available that enable both children and
adults to sample local water bodies for certain water quality
parameters, including:
- Temperature
- Acidity (pH)
- Clarity
- Dissolved oxygen
Although the official date for WWMD is September
18th, you can collect samples during most of the year
(March 22 until December 31), so you have plenty of time to get
involved!
Contact Bill
Gill for more information, or to request free testing
kits send him:
- The number of kits you need
- When you need them
- The address where you want them sent
Take lots of photos and have participants sign photo
release forms. After the event we will compile the photos and place
them on Flickr. Last year we had 30 facilities set up testing
activities, with over 400 participants-let's see how many we can
have this year!
