A New Year at Smithfield--Spring/Summer 2011 Edition

New Year's Resolutions. They have a certain connotation to them-hastily made on December 31st and promptly abandoned sometime in the first few weeks of January. We've all done it; made grandiose promises to cut out sweets, actually USE that elliptical machine we bought three years ago, limit our TV watching, or spend more time with family.  Although these resolutions may be a little too ambitious, making realistic goals and actively seeking their accomplishment is a valuable endeavor both personally and as a company.new year

As many of you know, last year we set ambitious goals for our company in relation to our sustainability program. As we start a new (fiscal) year here at Smithfield, it's natural for us to reflect on the past year- to assess our success on last year's resolutions and goals and take a hard look at what needs to be changed, modified or continued to ensure their accomplishment in the future.

So what are our goals? They can be divided into our five areas of focus: environment, animal care, food safety and quality, employee health and safety, and community involvement. While we have already made significant progress towards them, we will only be successful at meeting them if we all play our part in their completion.  Take a look at the goals below and see how you can become a part of making Smithfield an increasingly sustainable company.
