Smithfield Foods held a dinner on August 15 to recognize the winners of the company’s annual Environmental Excellence Awards. The awards recognize personnel at Smithfield subsidiaries that look beyond compliance to focus on pollution prevention, enhanced environmental protection and stewardship, and compliance assurance.
Since its inception in 2001, this program has encouraged Smithfield subsidiaries to implement the company’s environmental policy and to practice excellent environmental stewardship by recognizing outstanding efforts in this area each year.
This year, the company awarded 13 projects in seven different categories, including wastewater handling and treatment; environmental training; environmental management (ISO14001); energy and water conservation; waste reduction and pollution prevention; cleaner/greener production processes and/or packaging; and best recycling of a previous year’s project.
In addition, the company honored three facilities with President’s Awards. This year’s winners were: Farmland Foods in Crete, NE, which allowed scrap metal funds to go toward school scholarships; Smithfield Beef Group, which redesigned boxes for the entire subsidiary reducing cardboard purchases by 15%; and Farmland Foods, which has been recognized by the Governors of every state where the company has a kill facility.

Purchasing corn oil on the outside cheaper than natural gas to maximize permit that allows burning animal fats.

Figured out how to use a blower to utilize all pickle in the lines saving in excess of 500K gallons of pickle/year (200 gallons per load).

Continued last years project with excellent metrics and continued to evaluate - removed a grease separation coagulant for substantial savings.

Created a power point for all boot camp items to keep the local facilities up to date during the regular year.

Vendor Training completed at the vendor site to insure that spill training occurred.

Took the training manuals of an entire WWT facility and boiled down to 15 flowcharts for ease of training and use during ISO14001 audits.

Captured heat in refrigeration and preheated incoming water - great use of energy!

Ran a cooling water loop to cool hydraulic packs instead of flow through water 12.5 MM gallons of water or 33% reduction in flow.

Replaced old heating units with more efficient units and cut gas output by 53% - concentrated on highest environmental impact.
