As the summer comes to a close, employees with children are looking forward to the start of a new school year. Those of you with high school seniors must now turn your thoughts to the college application process. During this busy time, we encourage you to look into the scholarship opportunities that are available through the Smithfield-Luter Foundation.

Established in 2002, the Smithfield-Luter Foundation is a non-profit organization that acts as the philanthropic wing of Smithfield Foods, Inc. Since its inception, the Foundation has been proud to provide educational scholarships to the dependent children and grandchildren of full-time and retired employees of Smithfield and its family of companies.

The Foundation’s first partnership was with Joseph Luter III’s alma mater, Wake Forest University. Over the years, it has expanded the scholarship program to include the universities of Virginia Tech, Iowa State and Johnson & Wales. Just this year, the Foundation launched partnerships with three new schools – Fayetteville State University, Norfolk State University, and Virginia Union University (see article in the summer edition of the Smithfield Foods News).

Scholarships are available for any dependent child or grandchild of a full-time or retired employee of the Smithfield Foods family of companies. Once accepted to any of the selected universities, the student may apply for the scholarship through the university’s financial aid office. The scholarships are only awarded to students who have been accepted to one of the selected universities and who demonstrate a financial need.

The amount of each scholarship is determined by each of the school’s financial aid offices. The scholarships will be in an amount not to exceed the cost of tuition, course-related fees, books, supplies and equipment for the student. Students who receive a Smithfield-Luter Foundation scholarship will be free to pursue any course of study that they choose. However, preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in business, environmental preservation or animal husbandry, which are very important issues to Smithfield Foods, Inc.

Decisions on acceptance to the universities will be made solely by the admissions office at each university.

All of the university contacts are more than willing to help answer any questions that you may have. We urge you to take immediate action if your child or grandchild is interested by contacting the admissions office at the desired university for an application. This program is a great opportunity for our employees and their families and we look forward to its success.
