Smithfield Foods encourages community involvement at corporate and individual levels. We believe in the empowerment of our employees and we support them in their commitment to build better communities where they live and work. To this end, we have established an annual Employee Community Service Award to acknowledge employees who have spent time outside of work helping others.

Applicants may be self-nominated, or nominated by another employee and must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this award:

• They must be employees in good standing of Smithfield Foods’ family of companies; employees who retire during the calendar year of the award qualify.
• They must have distinguished themselves through an act or multiple acts of service that helped build better, stronger communities and made a positive difference in peoples’ lives.
• Employee contributions must be in the areas of education, hunger relief or environmental protection¹, or have a civic, cultural or social service nature.
• Non-monetary contributions will be given strong preference for the award.

The nominations must be made using the special form, and should include:

• employee’s name, position and company affiliation
• brief description of employee’s community service/ contribution and results
• period of time when the employee’s community contribution occurred, and number of hours contributed.

The award winner and runner up² will be selected by the Diversity Advisory Committee in Spring 2009. The winner will receive a company gift, appear in the Smithfield Foods newsletter, and have his/ her picture taken with the CEO at company headquarters in Smithfield, VA.

¹Note that this is different from the corporate Smithfield Foods Environmental Awards program, which recognizes and rewards innovative technologies, processes and ideas that reduce company costs and enhance environmental quality.

²The deadline for nominations is March 27, 2009 and are for community involvement contributions performed in calendar year 2008.
