After retiring from Smithfield Packing Company, Inc., Charlie Gach decided that he would like to use his 35 years of experience and share his wealth of knowledge with others by developing a Pork 101 opportunity to Smithfield Packing employees. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity! Since 2006, Smithfield has sponsored 11 classes, educating approximately 400 employees by emphasizing the importance of understanding the business in its entirety.
As a participant in the 2-day class, you will be involved with all facets of the pork business from conception to consumption. Some of the events that you’ll participate in include a pork puzzle and a plant tour. Aspects of the business that can not be hands-on, such as touring the farms and observing hot dog production, are experienced through informative presentations from various Smithfield personnel and NC State University professors.
