On August
13, 2003, six of Smithfield’s subsidiaries were presented with awards at the third-annual Environmental
Excellence Awards Banquet in Norfolk, Virginia. The recipients
include Schneider Foods, John
Morrell & Company,
Smithfield Packing Company (Landover, Md.), Smithfield Packing Company
(Kinston, N.C.) and ANIMEX (Poland). Murphy-Brown, LLC won the President’s
Award for its demonstration of exemplary environmental performance throughout
the year of 2002.
“We are proud to honor these subsidiaries for their great efforts
this year,” said Dennis Treacy, Smithfield’s vice president
of environmental, community and government affairs. “Smithfield
Foods is committed to proactive environmental stewardship. The innovative
projects
that we’re recognizing here tonight signify our commitment to preserving
our precious natural resources.”
The Environmental Excellence Awards recognize those subsidiaries and their employees who look beyond compliance to focus on preventing pollution and enhancing environmental stewardship. Factors in determining the award winners include environmental impact, social significance, originality, innovativeness, technical value, transferability, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Representatives of each Smithfield company with a winning project received individual certificates and plaques for their respective facilities at an awards ceremony held at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside. Jean-Mari Peltier, counselor to the administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, served as the event’s keynote speaker as well as a special presenter for the awards. In addition, each winning team received a check for $5,000, of which $3,000 will be donated to charity with the remaining balance divided equally among team members.
Past award recipients are Moyer Packing, Smithfield Packing Company/Lykes Meat Group, Patrick Cudahy, Inc., Smithfield Packing Company (Tar Heel, NC).
