The Smithfield-Luter Foundation recently announced the expansion of its scholarship offerings to two additional universities. The selected universities will now include Wake Forest University, Iowa State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech).
Established in 2002, The Smithfield-Luter Foundation provides and funds scholarships for dependent children or grandchildren of full-time or retired employees of the Smithfield Foods, Inc. family of companies.
To become eligible for a Foundation scholarship, the child must first be accepted to any of the three selected universities before he or she can apply for the scholarship. However, decisions of acceptance to each of the universities are made solely by the admissions office at each university.
The scholarship application must be sent to the university’s office of financial aid. All Foundation scholarships are based on the financial and demonstrable need of the student. The amount of each scholarship is determined by each of the university’s office of financial aid. The scholarships are in an amount not to exceed the cost of tuition, course-related fees, books, supplies and equipment for the student.
Students who receive a Smithfield-Luter Foundation scholarship are free to pursue any course of study that they choose. However, preference is given to students who demonstrate an interest in environmental preservation or animal husbandry, which are very important issues to Smithfield Foods, Inc. The trustees hope recipients of the scholarships will consider making a contribution to the foundation later in life to ensure that scholarships will be available for future generations.
