Several Smithfield Packing sites kicked off the summer by participating in environmental clean-up activities for Earth Day and “Clean the Bay Day.”

Kinston 1 employees and family members honored Earth Day by participating in the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s “Litter Sweep” program to clean up roads around the state.

Approximately 40 volunteers came out to clean along NC 11-55, between the Neuse River Bridge, U.S. 70-258 By-pass, Caswell Street, and other areas. At one point, the volunteers needed to form a human chain to pick up trash along a steep highway slope.

Charlie Prentice, environmental coordinator for the facility, said that with the plant’s ISO 14001 certification comes a commitment to community involvement and that he was glad to see so many employees and their children participate in the event.

Smithfield Packing also sponsored its 3rd annual “Clean the Bay Day” event on June 2. Volunteers picked up a total of 1,320 pounds of trash from a 1-mile section along Berry Hill Road in Smithfield, Va. There were 47 volunteers this year, including a group of girl scouts and the Virginia Executive Director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Ann Jennings.
